A black double-headed eagle on red: in 1443 Skanderbeg raised a red flag with a black eagle over the fortress of Krujë. Like the emblem of the Byzantine Empire, to which Albania once belonged, the eagle has two heads. On 28 November 1912 Albania declared its independence in Vlorë, and since 1993 the flag has again been flown in its simple form, without added symbols. On your relief the eagle spreads its wings across the whole country.

Besa means “to keep the promise”: whoever gives their word protects a guest with their own life. During the German occupation in the Second World War, Albanian families, most of them Muslim, hid Jewish refugees in their homes. Nearly all Jews in Albania survived, and the country had more Jews at the end of the war than before it.
