Black, red and gold go back to the uniforms of the Lützow Free Corps, who fought against Napoleon. At the Hambach Festival of 1832 many people carried black, red and gold flags, and in 1848 they became the colours of national unity and civic freedom. In 1949 the Parliamentary Council chose them for the new republic with only one vote against, and Article 22 of the Basic Law sets them down. On your relief the three stripes run across the whole country.
